The setting for this is an actual existing university.  However, I can’t say for certain there was a related newsgroup in 1996/7 and it’s not something I can easily research.

If there was, though, Jack’s explanation would be a very valid one: how many actual women would you expect to find on a newsgroup for a university with a major focus on engineering?
